July 31 – Trading the castle for the cabin

Blue skies and birds greeted us this morning as we headed off for a walk by a stream and paddocks leading us into town for breakfast. Unfortunately the cafe we were hoping to eat at was still waiting for their food delivery, so we enjoyed a coffee instead then walked to a nearby bakery. We picked up a ‘breakfast bap’, which is essentially a Welsh meal that consists of fitting as much meat as possible between 2 slices of bread, and walked back to the castle to enjoy it in the gardens. The peacocks were very eager to try some too, and fair enough because they were delicious.

Jumping in the car, we then set off to the Lake District, saying goodbye to the Welsh countryside (very sad) and hello to English traffic (also very sad). We crawled along the motorway in between Liverpool and Manchester, soon after that we were in the Lake District and driving into Windermere. We picked up some supplies from the local Sainsbury’s then headed to our cabin for check in.

After we had done some laundry we went for a walk along the lake, it was quite chilly with the wind but it wasn’t stopping the locals from having a dip. After arriving back to some dry laundry we had dinner overlooking vast hillsides and watched the beginnings of the sunset. A light drizzle swept through but produced some amazing sunbeams to show for it. We then planned our day ahead which will involve a walk up one of the hills beside the lake. Unfortunately the town was overrun with tourists today (us two adding to the number) around lunchtime, so we are hoping to get there around 7am tomorrow to experience a more quiet stroll through the main streets. Hopefully not everyone and their dog has the same idea — we will keep you posted. An early night for an early start.
