August 6 – Foundations, Fjords and forts

We were up very early as our taxi arrived at 4:45am to take us to the airport. We arrived and got through customs with plenty of time to spare and waited in the food court until our gate was announced, which was soon followed by “flight closing” which gave us a bit of a fright. But we were able to get there with plenty of time to spare as the flight was delayed because the shuttle bus to take us to the plane was very late.

With just a short 2 hour flight, it felt quick. And like that, we were in Norway. We caught the train from the airport to Oslo central station and walked to our hotel to drop our bags in luggage storage, then headed out to town.

First we went to the Nordic Bible Museum, which held a collection of Bibles, with various translations, from centuries gone by. We had a wonderful tour guide, Jael, who was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was a great experience! Amazing to see how the Scriptures have been preserved and translated into our vernacular and others.

We then wandered around the oldest building in Oslo across the road and sat to enjoy the square and quiet city life, which was quite the change from London. Across from the square was the Akershus Fortress where we wandered over to find the Navy band playing in the amphitheatre, so we sat and enjoyed for a time.

Then we walked through the fortress, around the pier and onto the Opera House, where we had great views of the city and fjord.

After that we wandered back to check in and freshen up. After a thunderstorm and sun shower we found a street food court where we enjoyed dinner and the unique atmosphere. It was then back to the hotel to prepare for tomorrow, where we head north to Ålesund.
