August 7 – Dinner with a view

We were up early again (seems to be a running theme this holiday) as we headed to Oslo train station to take the train north. Taking off at 7:50am we snaked our way past the airport and along the Mjøsa lake, with stunning views out of the window. Hard to describe the magnitude!

Stopping at Dombås to change train, we were then on our way to Åndalsnes. As the train climbed and weaved, we had astounding views of the mountains, rivers and waterfalls. The same could be said of the bus we then caught into Ålesund. As we were getting closer to the coast, we could see more inlets and ocean, passing lots of little towns along the way.

Arriving in Ålesund at 4pm we walked up to our Airbnb and from our window we could see all of town.

With the weather not looking good tomorrow we decided to do our planned Sukkertoppen walk today. We popped down to the shops to pick up dinner for the road, but just missed the bus to the bottom of the hill, so we walked through town and around to the start of the trail, a 60 minute warm up for our climb. The climb itself was quite steep at the start, through the forest, then leveled out for a bit with some nice view points. It was then uphill with steps and scrambling rocks to get to the top. Some parts were quite muddy and slippery but we made it with 360 views of the surrounding towns and islands. Looking out west toward the Norwegian Sea, we could see various islands, but east was probably the best view of Ålesund and the surrounding mountain ranges.

We stayed up the summit for a while, had our dinner then made our way back down to catch the return bus into town and popped into Kiwi for tomorrow’s meals.

The whole trek was about a 4 hour round trip. Thoroughly outdoored-out, we had a lovely night in viewing the twinkling lights of town and a deep sleep.
