We were up early again, this time to visit The Last Supper painting. We walked to the train station and caught it to the convent the painting was originally commissioned for. We queued up and went through extensive security to get to the viewing. The painting itself was incredible. Quite hard to describe, some thing that we noticed was the paint pigments themselves, the lighting Da Vinci used and fine skill. Most of all, the content itself, Christ instituting the Sacrament and the events that occurred at the Last Supper, was super special. We only had a 15 minute viewing window, due to the conservation of the painting. Well worth it.
We then had breakfast at a local cafe, with a pastry and espresso at the coffee bench, like the locals. We then walked to the Sforzesco castle and the grounds, then through the large city park.
After catching our train back to the hotel we got ready to check out and make our way to Lake Como. We walked our way through the busy station to find our platform and once settled on the train, we passed the 1.5 hr ride with window views of the city and then countryside. It then turned to mountains and the lake.
After we reached Lierna, the town we were staying in, we made our way to the accommodation. Our bnb host greeted us, and we had a nice welcome chat. We are the second pair of Australians he has hosted in about 20 years — he was very surprised we made it!
We then popped our things down, changed and headed out for lunch and a swim. We got very yummy sandwiches from the local cafe, and then walked about 15 mins to the local ‘beach’. We enjoyed a lovely swim and sunbake at Lake Como! It was so nice to just take our time, and not have to worry about sharks, seaweed or sand (in places other than toes). The views were spectacular and the atmosphere relaxed and peaceful. It was nice to people-watch the locals, and see their slice of paradise. We topped it off with a gelato and walk back to the bnb.
After another chat with the host (he likes a talk!), we had a little rest, just to get out of the sun for a bit, and freshen up, then headed out for dinner. We had pizzas on the terrace at the local restaurant down the road, with views of the lake and surrounding towns.
After a delicious meal, we visited the local church, walked around town and down to the lake, enjoying the dusk turn to night and listening to the locals chat. With the stars out and warm night breeze we stayed out for quite a while before heading back to chill out on our terrace balcony before bed.
