September 8 – Pool, pasta and a procession

We had a slow early morning before walking into town for breakfast. We found a cafe that had amazing views over the Tuscan hills, we had a cappuccino and croissant each and enjoyed the scenery.

We then made our way back to the room for a quick swim before checking out and packing the car. With plenty of time before we needed to drive to our next town, we relaxed by the deck and were joined by the resident chocolate lab.

Then walking into town we wandered to the Piazza Grande at the top of the town and visited the Cathedral Saint Mary Of The Assumption then further onto the edge of the city walls and wandered through an art display and the Montepulciano gardens.

We then found a lovely spot for lunch where we shared an entree of meats and cheeses then shared pasta.

Wandering down to the Piazza Grande, we were about to find some gelato when we spotted people up on the Comune di Montepulciano, so we checked it out and were able to get tickets to walk up to the top of the tower. Once we passed the terrace, the stairs were very steep, narrow and the roof was very low at some points.

Reaching the top, we heard a familiar accent. 2 other Aussie travellers were up there and we had a lovely chat to them about everywhere they had been in Italy.

Returning back down we continued to get our gelato, Sarah went back to the same place as last night to get the wild cherry, while Will was after a different set of flavours. Getting dark chocolate and the best salted caramel we had so far from another place.

We then walked back to our car, enjoying the view one last time before setting off to Pitigliano. We found a spot along the way to take a photo looking back at the city, then continued on to our Agriturismo just outside of Pitigliano.

Arriving just after 5pm we checked in and met our lovely host Francesca, then jumped into the pool and had a relax before heading out to town just after sunset.

We arrived in the ancient town to the lights just starting to come on, stopping first at a viewpoint we then continued along the very windy roads to find a car park just outside of town.

Walking into the old city we found a place for dinner where we had local traditional wild boar and pici pasta. Then the waiter convinced us to try a tart for dessert, thankfully she did, as it was very nice.

We then wandered to our car to drive back but had to wait as there was a prayer procession through from the cathedral (in town) to the other church (out of town). It was lovely to hear and watch, but it meant for a late night by the time we got back. Eventually arriving back we called it a night, ready to learn how to make pasta tomorrow.
